His research focuses on medieval Jewish society in the Islamic world. His recent book, This Noble House: Jewish Descendants of King David in the Medieval Islamic East (University of Pennsylvania Press, ), is a study of the profound concern with biblical genealogy that developed among Jews in Arabic-speaking lands. As there is little interest in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies in integrating manuscripts and printed books in Arabic script into the research programs of Critical Bibliography and Book History, there is less competition for funding and significant resources can be invested into the digitization of manuscripts and printed books in Arabic script. Antisemitism in the Arab world increased greatly in the 20th century, for several reasons: the breakdown of the Ottoman Empire and traditional Islamic society; European influence, brought about by Western imperialism and Arab Christians; Nazi propaganda; resentment over Jewish nationalism (see Zionism); and the rise of Arab nationalism.. Traditionally, Jews in the Muslim world were considered.
